This Baby Orangutan Got Sick Living in the Zoo – Now He’s on His Way to Freedom

The International Animal Rescue (IAR) team in Indonesia has rescued a baby orangutan from Sinka Zoo in Jalan Malindo, Coral Bay in Singkawang Regency, West Kalimantan. The rescue was carried out with the cooperation of officials from the Natural Resources Conservation Centre of West Kalimantan. Now, little Badul has already started his road to recovery and, eventually, he will be able to return to his real home in the wild.

The IAR team learned about Badul when they received information about a sick baby orangutan running a high temperature at the zoo. Medical team members of BKSDA Kalbar traveled to the facility right away in order to give Badul emergency medical treatment.

The 18-month-old Badul had been kept at the zoo since November of 2017. The examination showed he had a problem with his respiratory system and had difficulty breathing. He was coughing and had abnormal sounds coming from his lungs, the team’s vet reported.

Since humans and apes are genetically very similar, orangutans are prone to picking up diseases from people – and some diseases passed from humans to young orangutans are dangerous enough to even kill the animals if they are left untreated, IAR explains.

Badul was transferred to the rescue center and settled into the quarantine quarters for baby orangutans where he will spend eight weeks and undergo two complete medical checks before meeting other orangutans.

Thanks to the rescue team, Badul is now safe and receiving the necessary care which will bring him back to health. Once he is through his rehabilitation process, there is a great chance that he will be able to return to his natural habitat – where he belongs and deserves to be. For now, however, he is fighting the disease and starting to feel at home at the rescue where he is finally getting adequate care.
